Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Grass and Legume Plant Breeding Program Assistant at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position offers the opportunity to work and develop skills in grass and legume crop breeding and seed production research. Work is full time over the summer, with the option for part time during the school year. The incumbent will assist laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies leading to the improvement grasses and cover crops for seed yield, stem rust resistance, root characters that improve soil health and other novel traits. This will involve working closely with other scientists and technicians. Employees will communicate with the project leader and others for guidance on experimental procedures, set-up, sampling, analyses of data, etc. 

Employees will need the ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences verbally and in writing, to work well independently as well as in team efforts, to maintain an orderly work space and to work safely, and above all a willingness to learn new things related to the job.

Position Duties

40%: Maintain greenhouse and field plant materials through plant watering and fertilizing, seeding and transplanting, controlling weeds, making crosses, harvesting and cleaning seeds and related activities.

40%: Assists experiments through duties that include preparing labels for samples or experiments, collecting data on plant performance and samples for tests and experiments and use of common laboratory equipment.

20%: Enter, tabulate, and summarize data for review by technicians and scientists.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
