*Student Intern - Emergency Medical Technician

Job Description

Position Summary

The Career Services Department is recruiting for a part-time Emergency Medical Technician Student Intern.  This 12-week EMT Internship with the City of Victoria Fire Department is part of the Texas Internship Initiative Grant, offered in partnership with Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent and Victoria College. Designed for students in their final semester of the Emergency Medical Services Program, this opportunity provides hands-on field experience with a local EMS provider. Interns will work 8–12 hours per week, depending on shift and placement needs.

To participate, students must meet the Texas Internship Initiative Grant eligibility criteria. Selected interns will receive a stipend from Victoria College to support transportation, childcare, and tuition/fees during the internship period. This internship offers students a valuable opportunity to build clinical confidence, gain exposure to emergency response, and strengthen their readiness for certification and employment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Assist EMTs and paramedics during emergency medical calls, including patient assessment and care;
  2. Observe and support life-saving procedures under the guidance of certified EMS personnel;
  3. Participate in patient transportation and transfer of care to hospital staff;
  4. Maintain inventory and restock supplies on ambulances;
  5. Learn to properly clean and disinfect EMS equipment and vehicles;
  6. Practice accurate and timely documentation of patient encounters;
  7. Follow safety protocols and patient privacy guidelines (HIPAA);
  8. Attend briefings, training sessions, and debriefs as directed by supervisor;
  9. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

INTERN LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 
  • Apply classroom knowledge to real-world EMS scenarios;
  • Gain experience in patient care, assessment, and emergency response protocols;
  • Understand EMS operations, communication systems, and chain of care;
  • Develop professional behavior and decision-making in high-stress situations;
  • Build familiarity with medical equipment, tools, and ambulance systems;
  • Strengthen collaboration and communication skills in team environments.

Qualifications

  1. Educational Requirements: Currently enrolled in the final semester of the Emergency Medical Services Program at Victoria College (EMT Level 1 Certificate or AAS);
  2. Current CPR certification and completion of clinical prerequisites;
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  4. Ability to follow instructions and maintain composure in emergencies;
  5. Commitment to patient care, safety, and confidentiality;
  6. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  7. Availability to work flexible schedules, including early mornings or evenings.

Physical Demands

The intern must be able to perform duties typical of the EMS profession, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and prolonged standing. The role may involve lifting and moving patients or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, working in confined spaces, and exposure to a variety of weather and environmental conditions. Interns must be able to wear PPE, visually and audibly detect alarms or instructions, and respond rapidly to emergency situations.
